Inception of Geography

The first map was created in 9th Century AD. The dimensions of Geography expanded only after its usage in sea explorations increased along with other human activities. Later on, meteorological science, geographic information system and urban planning also came under the umbrella of these dimensions.

It was a Greek scholar, Erestothanis, who used the word ‘Geography for the first time in 3rd century B.C. The Mathematicians and scholars of Greek, Rome China, and Arabia contributed substantially to the growth of Geography. The scholars and travelers of Islam also augmented the arena of Geography. During the Middle Ages Europeans also added to this field. Their chief investigation began after the Ottomon's invasion of Constantinople. After the fall of Constantinople (Byzantium), the routes connecting Europe and Asia were blocked by the Muslims. The art of mapping emerged after the numerous sea expeditions of Europeans.

When you apply for Geography major in any of the Arts Colleges in India, you may have to go through an entrance exam, and this type of question could be asked.

So, it was introduced as a discipline in the universities of Europe in the 19th century. In the universities of India, it was introduced in 1930s. At the initial stage, the subject covered issues associated to, the structure of earth, and other places.

Currently, in this era of industrial revolution, the subject is utilized to evaluate constant growth, meteorological issues, unprecedented growth, and urbanization. It can be said that the subject is useful to analyze data.
