Spanish in India

“La gente de EspaƱa” or the people of Spain have always been facinated by India and its culture. The comercial and tourist aspect of the country have also attracted them. Futhermore, the Spanish language has also taken over India. A slew of people are opting for a degree in this language every year. Giving in to the high and ever increasing demand, several Arts Colleges in India have started providing courses for Spanish.

A great advantage of opting for a degree in Spanish is that this degree opens up a huge number of opportunities for graduates in India as well as abroad. The job opportunities available in Hispanic countries such as Mexico, Argentina and other Latin American countries are well paying and interesting to the Indian youth. In addition, there is tremendous demand for Spanish graduates in Spain’s embassies in India for translation as well as India’s embassies in Spain and other Hispanic countries. Graduates from the top 10 arts institutes in India are highly preferred.

Another reason behind the increase in the popularity of Spanish amongst the Indian youth is the easiness of the language. Experienced professors and seniors from top colleges state that students prefer choosing Spanish over other languages like Sanskrit, French, Mandarin and German as these languages require years of intensive practice and learning by an individual so that he or she is able to converse in it or speak and write it whereas Spanish is much easier and quick to learn, speak and write.

Inception of Psychology Discipline in India

The discipline of Psychology chiefly involves study of human and animal behavior. Those who are good at observing must choose the discipline as honors.  It is not going to be easy at all. Also, there’s a stigma attached to it. The students are thought to be preoccupied with judging or analyzing people they meet or friends they make. That’s not true. It is more of comprehension of human behavior and mind-body connection.

Foundation of the first Department of Psychology in India
The very first department of Psychology was established at University of Calcutta in 1915. At that time, Sigmund Freud was preoccupied studying the psyche of the people of Victorian age. Girindrasekhar Bose, a South Asian psychoanalyst, is known as the first president of the Indian Psychoanalytic society of early twentieth century. To your surprise, Freud and Bose had had a dialogue which continued for twenty years via letters. In 1921, Bose submitted his doctoral thesis called Concept of Repression wherein he merged Hindu thought with Freudian concepts.

In 1924, Indian Psychological Association was established and in 1926 the Indian Journal of Psychology was initiated. The works of Ashis Nandy, Christiane Hartnack, Mansi Kumar, Amit Ranjan Basu, and Sudhir Kakar influenced Bose. Despite the early beginnings of psychology in India, the discipline is still seeking for a better grounding and firm roots. It is vital to shun the stigma related to psychology so that the students proudly pursue degree courses in Psychology.
